By Kathy O’Brien, Court 7
Because the majority of crimes like robbery (sometimes armed), grand theft auto, and others were occurring in the nine garage court areas on the Coliseum side, the committee was to survey and report on the current state of lighting in a narrow scope–in garage courts 1-9–and to make recommendations for improvements.
The primary focus was to improve lighting in the areas where residents park their cars and walk to the patio entrances of their units.
Detailed surveys of light fixtures, parking areas, and walkways were conducted and mapped in all nine courts, with two courts selected as pilots for the proposed improvements. Court 7 is a very “standard” court layout, with results generally applicable to many other courts; and Court 1 is a more “unique” court layout, as are the East and West Circles – providing an idea of the different challenges in those areas.
The survey and planning work is complete, and upgraded fixtures and appropriate LED bulb recommendations have been made. A few existing florescent fixtures were replaced with LED fixtures as examples. The VG staff has now begun implementation of those plans for pilot courts 1 and 7, starting with walkway lights.
When the pilot implementation is complete and approved, our staff can then take over the lighting survey process. They can use the Safety Committee’s surveys for courts 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 to complete upgrading to LED lighting and possibly the rest of the courts in the future.
