TALKS BY GAILYN SAROYAN
Artist and cultural historian Gailyn Saroyan created and delivered these talks at Village Green (formerly Baldwin Hills Village).

Gailyn lived at the Village Green from 2000 until her death, at the age of 74, in 2020. She began researching the community soon after moving in and worked to restore the historic paint colors and landscape, among other activist activities. Fascinated by the visionaries responsible for the Village Green, Gailyn began writing a book about their enduring cultural legacy within the international context of the Garden Cities Movement.

Rico Lebrun and His Mural

FILM BY REGINALD JOHNSON

Reginald D. Johnson, the lead architect at Baldwin Hills Village, took 16mm Kodachrome color films as ground broke on the development in early 1941, and followed the construction and the early occupancy of the Village. He, like the others involved in the development, lived in the Village during the 1940s, and his own apartment is pictured in the film below, along with footage of amenities now lost - like our tennis and badminton courts, playgrounds, Rico Lebrun mural and Clubhouse.
